    • I was SO excited to recently hear about the following study

      about CHILDHOOD NUTRITION and CANCER.

      THE BOYD ORR COHORT STUDY

The Boyd Orr cohort is an historical cohort study carried out by the University of Bristol Department of Social Medicine to investigate the long term impact of children’s diet, growth, living conditions and health on adult cardiovascular disease and cancer.  This study is based on a 65 year follow-up of 4,999 children.  (http://www.epi.bris.ac.uk/boydorr/)

There are MANY FINDINGS from this study- but I recently heard of the following

which put a SMILE  on my face.

      FINDINGS:

Increased childhood fruit intake was associated with reduced risk of incident cancer.

      • Childhood fruit consumption may have a long term protective effect on cancer risk in adults.
      • Observational studies in adulthood suggest that higher levels of fruit consumption are associated with decreased risk of some cancers. (info found at http://jech.bmj.com/content/57/3/218.full)

Childhood fruit consumption seems to be protective against later development of cancer.  I LOVED hearing this...because my children LOVE fruit!!!  Does this study and it's findings surprise me?  No- we should all know that fruit is good for our bodies.

But since my children eat A LOT of fruit- this definitely reassures to me that I am doing good!  (We all need a little reassurance now and then...am I right?)

So- feed your children fruit every day!  Try to use fruit that is in season...it tastes so much better!

And everytime your little one takes a huge bite out of a crisp juicy apple- know that they are being protected!

      LIFE IS GOOD!
